Lib Dem Councillors back action for safer streets

Local Liberal Democrats are backing two road safety proposals set to be considered at the Central Beds Traffic Management Meeting this evening (Monday 26th January).

Leighton Linslade North councillors are supporting a community petition for a much-needed zebra crossing outside Dovery Academy. The petition has been organised by the community who are concerned about the lack of safe crossing arrangements, particularly for families taking children to and from school.

The councillors are also backing proposals for traffic calming, a 20mph speed limit and increased parking provision on Vandyke Road. The proposals also include junction improvements at the George Street and Regent Street junctions with Vandyke. The scheme is being funded through developer contributions, ensuring improvements can be delivered without additional cost to local taxpayers.

Councillor David Bligh, Leighton Linslade North, who will be speaking at the meeting said:
“These two schemes could make a real impact in improving safety in two problem hotspots in the town.

“Parents, residents and school staff are very concerned that crossing Heath Road, particularly at school drop-off and pick up times has become increasingly unsafe. The lack of a safe crossing place means families with young children often struggle to cross the road and unfortunately report regular ‘near misses’.

“Residents of Vandyke Road have long been very concerned about speeds along the road which is a key school route, as well as the lack of safe passing places. These new proposals will mean safer passing arrangements, more parking spaces for residents and a lower speed limit to make everyone using the road safer.

“I hope that Central Beds Council will listen to residents views and progress these schemes as soon as possible so that we can improve safety for residents and pedestrians alike.”
